I think it should be required for every new game developer to play Half Life 2 (+Ep1) and/or Portal with developer commentary on. But at launch there was no real improvement to this process, so it falls back to being a chore (good thing we have the internet these days to find solutions.) In the alphas, the puzzle-solving that harks back to 1990s point-and-click adventure games was acceptable because it was new, mechanics were still being put in place, etc. In the alphas, the house layout changed greatly with almost every iteration, but with the betas it more-or-less locked in place and only had relatively minor changes to the final. Watching Game Theory and early streams of the alphas and betas it seemed to have far more promise. If you have to have been watching and/or playing it since alpha to understand how it works, that doesn't sound like solid game design to me. That's likely to be the experience of many gamers who pick up this title without any familiarity with it.

He sat down, tried to play it, found it extremely frustrating (if visually intriguing), and eventually gave up. So, I'll say pretty confidently, that you just don't know what you're talking about here. Looks like you didn't quite do ANY research on what you were playing. You seem to jump into it at the end of all this and have a skewed idea of the game. Over 4-million views with over 45-thousand likes. Trust me when I say he doesn't spend time for his 17-million subscribers playing games they don't want to see. Over 2.8-million views and over 43-thousand likes to that video. Take for instance one of DanTDM's play throughs. The games keeps the clunkiness of the early access versions because it's been a growing audience of fans. It's been fun to play it as it changes, and that's half the fun. This game has been evolving with access to early alpha versions and beta versions, each of which were mostly different.
